I think we should work on making out into and conclusion music quieter. Mixed with its abruptness in following the end of Justin’s speech, the video does’t flow out of or into it well enough. The message of the music fits with the message of our text, however.
Most of all, I think we need to work on our visuals. Our plan was to make a sound recording and we decideed to add visuals recently, so we didn’t have much time to add more (since we only have about four) or to refine the ones we have, since the fonts and colors are kind of bland so far. The bulk of our time over the next week should go into making our text more visually interesting, probably through using screenshots of facebook of comments that mirror what Justin is saying at the time that they appear on the screen.

Group Progress Report

So far, our project is going fairly well. It’s been hard for us to find times to meet and we’re all very busy with other schoolwork, but we’ve still made time to meet. The three of us all have strong work ethics and we haven’t had any problem having each other take responsibility for researching or writing parts of our project. Our research is finished, and we’ve recorded most of our recording for our project. It’s now a matter of writing up the rest of the script for what we want to include in the recording, as well as editing the recording.
We’re also working on making a user-friendly, visual version of our project to accommodate the hearing-impaired. We will most likely be making a power-point presentation for this part of the project.

    Midterm Reflection

In trying to analyze which publication to submit my pitch to, I found it helpful that earlier in the semester we read through the submission guidelines of these three publications; this gave me a basic idea of what each was looking for in submissions while still prompting me to look into the various branch descriptions to figure out which best suited my project.

I’ve enjoyed our discussions of how effective a text is, whether it makes an argument, how the content reflects the message of the text, and the other criteria that we focused on with the evaluation criteria assignment. It definitely helped to solidify my idea of how to use and combine texts effectively. This contrasts with my initial confusion at the beginning of the semester, when I felt that we were focusing on the basic aspects of a certain text (a youtube video, an article, etc.) rather than how to make use of its strengths and limitations when composing a text.

In short, I feel that we’ve become more focused on the careful, purposeful choices that should go into manipulating media. I think this has made the class more enjoyable for me, and helpful in broadening my understanding of how to use multi-media.

    Evaluation Criteria

I thought that The Violence of Text could be best evaluated with the group 1′s evaluation setup. I thought that the three headings were simple to understand, yet easily applicable.
Most of the bullet points in this groups evaluation are in the form of questions, and I like that and the fact that they’re relatively straight-forward. I think that these are valuable questions to ask about Miles’s piece, and think that this is a good setup with which one could judge a lot of multi-modal works.
